| Truly
the train for all seasons, the California Zephyr takes you to
the ski slopes and the hiking paths, the desert and the ocean.
You'll ride from lush farmlands, through the heartland, under
the Rocky Mountains and eventually, to the warm waters of the
Pacific Ocean. Though you'll see dozens of peaks, it's tough to
single out one highpoint of a trip like this.
Departing from
Chicago, the train travels gradually uphill toward Denver.
There, you'll climb the impressive Front Range of the Rockies,
and cross the Continental Divide at 12,000 feet. Next, you'll
pass through the Moffat Tunnel, which at six miles long is the
longest railroad tunnel in the world. It's downhill from there,
as the train snakes alongside the Colorado River toward
Salt Lake City. You'll pass Lake Tahoe, and the famous
Donner Pass. Heading southwest, after a quick stop in Reno, the
train steams toward Sacramento, California's capital. The trip
concludes in Oakland, where the celebrated city of
San Francisco is just a motorcoach ride away. |
